Who was Mary Baker Eddy?

Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) was an influential American author, teacher, and religious leader, noted for her groundbreaking ideas about spirituality and health, which she named Christian Science. She articulated those ideas in her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, first published in 1875. Four years later she founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, which today has branch churches and societies around the world. In 1908 she launched The Christian Science Monitor, a leading international newspaper, the recipient, to date, of seven Pulitzer Prizes.

Mrs Eddy's love of Poetry

Eddy wrote poems from the time she was a child. As a young woman, she published her poetry in local newspapers. Later many of her poems were printed in The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel. Ultimately, many of them were collected in a volume titled Poems. "More personal than prose": Mary Baker Eddy's poetry collection talks about the publishing of that volume.

Seven of her poems were also turned into hymns:

"Christmas Morn" published in The Christian Science Journal December 1898.

"Love" issued first in the Journal for June 1896.

"Satisfied" appeared in the Sentinel for January 18, 1900,4 and in the Journal the following month.

"Mother's Evening Prayer" first printed in the Journal of August 1893.

"Christ My Refuge" first printed in the Lynn Reporter on February 15, 1868.

"Communion Hymn" first printed in the Lynn Transcript on December 2, 1876

"Feed My Sheep" first published in the Journal, March 1887

Mrs Eddy in Charleston

On Christmas day 1843, Mary Baker Glover sailed with her new husband, George Glover, to Charleston. The Glovers settled at 51 Hasell Street, which had been built by her husband in his work as a building contractor. She called the newly constructed home, "our beautiful home in Charleston." Glover had first arrived in Charleston not long after the Ansonborough fire - The Great Fire of 1838 - which destroyed around one quarter of the city center, burning nearly 150 acres at the center of the commercial district, including more than 500 properties and 11,000 buildings. With his experience as a mason, carpenter, and builder, Glover worked alongside his business partner, George William Logan, to build a number of properties, including 51 Hasell Street.

As a young woman, Mary Baker Eddy wrote poetry and prose for magazines and newspapers. It is believed that she continued these activities while living in Charleston during the winter of 1844. The couple then traveled to Wilmington, North Carolina, where Glover died of yellow fever on June 27, 1844, three months before the birth of their son, George. Through the help of Glover's friends within the Freemasons, she returned to her father's home in Tilton, New Hampshire.

"Are prayer and healing for you? Even if you have no experience with spirituality or religion, or you're not even sure what you think about God, can you still pray and be healed."
